Dynamic response of oceanic hydrates to sea level drop

چکیده
[1] During sea-level drop, water and gas pressures within oceanic hydrate systems can exceed the total vertical stress and this can drive slope failure and gas venting. We investigate this behavior with a multi-phase fluid and heat flow model. During sea-level drop, fluid pressures drop much less than the total stress due to both the high gas compressibility and hydrate dissociation. In permeable sediments, hydrate dissociation, water expulsion and gas mobility combine to induce underpressure and downward water flow from the seafloor. This study provides a causal mechanism for slope failure and fluid exchange that occur in hydrate systems during sea-level fall. Citation: Liu, X., and P. Limited contribution of ancient methane to surface waters of the U.S. Beaufort Sea shelf
In response to warming climate, methane can be released to Arctic Ocean sediment and waters from thawing subsea permafrost and decomposing methane hydrates. However, it is unknown whether methane derived from this sediment storehouse of frozen ancient carbon reaches the atmosphere. We quantified the fraction of methane derived from ancient sources in shelf waters of the U.S. Beaufort Sea, a reg...

Ecosystems at the land-sea interface are vulnerable to rising sea level. Intertidal habitats must maintain their surface elevations with respect to sea level to persist via vertical growth or landward retreat, but projected rates of sea-level rise may exceed the accretion rates of many biogenic habitats. While considerable attention is focused on climate change over centennial timescales, relat...

We present climatic consequences of the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) using the coupled climate model CLIMBER-3α, which contains a statisticaldynamical atmosphere and a three-dimensional ocean model. We compare those with emulations of 19 state-of-the-art atmosphere-ocean general circulation models (AOGCM) using MAGICC6. The RCPs are designed as standard scenarios for the forthco...
متن کاملModeling of Oceanic Gas Hydrate Instability and Methane Release in Response to Climate Change
Paleooceanographic evidence has been used to postulate that methane from oceanic hydrates may have had a significant role in regulating global climate, implicating global oceanic deposits of methane gas hydrate as the main culprit in instances of rapid climate change that have occurred in the past. However, the behavior of contemporary oceanic methane hydrate deposits subjected to rapid tempera...
متن کاملCurrent Limitation and Speed Drop Minimization in Optimal-Efficiency of Induction Motors
In conventional direct torque control (DTC), the stator flux is usually kept constant by controlling the x-axis component of the stator voltage in the stator flux reference frame. The torque is then controlled by the y-axis component of stator voltage. In this scenario, the stator current does not exceed its permissible value. However, in the so-called optimal efficiency mode, the induction mot...
